SABC Rubbishes Thuso Motaung Sacking Reports
False alarm, folks: Thuso Moutaung is NOT leaving Lesedi FM.
On Wednesday, 21 February, multiple media outlets reported that the popular presenter – as well as his wife, Mamontha Motaung, who serves as the radio station’s business manager – had been fired from Lesedi FM by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
This supposed firing was due to the Motaungs getting in trouble after verbally attacking sports presenter, Thabo Kofa, during a meeting with presenters and producers last September.
Kofa raised the issue of non-payments during his coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which led to his being attacked.
On Thursday, 22 February, the SABC officially denied that the couple had been fired or suspended, although Mr Motaung will be off the air for two weeks.
“The SABC is disappointed at this irresponsible and sensational reporting by various media publications, and would like to set the record straight. Mr Thuso Motaung has been temporarily unscheduled for operational reasons and will be back on his programme after two weeks,” they declared in a statement.
“Mrs Mamontha Motaung is also not dismissed nor is she suspended, as it has been falsely reported.”
No word on what these “operational reasons” may be, but here’s hoping that all goes well!
